From the moment you accept your offer to study at ACU until you walk off campus as a graduate, we have specific programs and targeted, ongoing support to ease your transition from military service to study.

Transition program

The Veteran Transition Program (VTP) is a unique program for commencing student veterans. Through workshops, lectures, tutorials and sessions focusing on reflective thought and critical thinking, the program equips you with key academic skills and gives you a better understanding of what to expect during your first year of higher education.

The program is student-centred and aims to:

  • familiarise you with the ACU environment and foster a sense of support from academic staff, our services and your peer network
  • provide knowledge of basic academic techniques, with an opportunity for practical application
  • generate a sense of belonging through campus culture and the support of your greater peer networks.

The VTP aims to provide a ‘low-risk, low-stress’ setting to acclimatise you to university and help you develop an understanding of what is expected throughout your study. As recognition of your participation and effort, you’ll have the option to have the program credited towards your degree. The program will be recognised as one of the Core Curriculum units and reduce your overall study load moving forward.

Soldiers' five to study

A 'soldiers' five' is a commonly used Army phrase to describe a brief with five key points or of five minutes' duration. The Student Veteran Services team has used this as a basis for the Soldiers' five to study: tips for soldiers from soldiers.

The guide offers informal advice from student veterans who have transitioned to study and is informed by research. Our student veterans identified five tips that they think cover the most valuable information commencing veterans should know.

ACU has made this resource available to all our veteran students and external organisations to help support veterans transitioning into university.
