Module three: More Effective Virtual and Remote Working

Prework: 1–2 hours
Intensive: 3.5 hours
Assessment: optional

With a global pandemic creating anxiety and fear, productive remote workers must have well-established processes. Processes for communication, socialisation and coordination so no one is feeling isolated and so teams and individuals are productive.

When we meet face-to-face, we use many non-verbal clues to understand what’s going on. Without face-to-face cues, remote work needs deeper soft skills tailored to remote working. How to connect with people in video calls: how to build relationships by video, phone and email. Persuasion works best face-to-face, so how can we reduce uncertainty and how can we motivate people to act?

Working remotely in virtual teams needs organisational processes for how communication happens, how socialisation happens and how coordination happens. People can be far more aggressive when not face-to-face, just take a quick look at social media. So, how can we prevent and manage conflict online? How do we make virtual teams more effective?
