Designed specifically for Widening Participation partner primary schools, webinars will be held online via Zoom and are free of charge. Understanding Grammar and Teaching It

Join our series of professional development webinars aimed at helping teachers build on their existing knowledge and understanding of grammar for primary school students. Each webinar will focus on different grammatical areas. Three targeted grammatical levels will be covered: words and phrases, sentences and clauses, and at the paragraph or textual level. This professional development series is a collaboration between ACU’s Equity Pathways unit and the English Language Centre.

Word and phrasal level: nouns, adjectives, noun groups, pronouns, prepositions and phrases

This first webinar in the series will outline the fundamental building blocks of English grammar. These concepts form the basis for more advanced understanding and application of grammar and literacy.

Word and phrasal level: verbs, adverbs, verb groups, nominalisation

The second webinar continues with the basic elements and concentrates on action and describing action through an exploration of verbs, adverbs and verb groups. Stage 3 teachers will also benefit from understanding how nominalisation works and how students can use this to improve their writing.

Sentence and clause level: sentence types and clause types

The fourth webinar will take grammar to the next level by focusing on sentence level structures. Simple, compound and complex sentence structures will be covered, as well as various clause types which help elevate student writing by adding variety to their technique.

Textual cohesion: paragraph structure, connectives and reference words

The fifth and final webinar aims to show teachers how students can create better texts through cohesion. In particular, structure, reference words and connectives will be highlighted as instrumental features of text and textual cohesion. This will not only help students write better texts but will also support general literacy and comprehension.

Target audience: Can span most stages, however the bulk of these references refer to stage 3.
