Professor Claude Romano is Maitre de Conferences (HDR) in Philosophy, University of Paris-Sorbonne and Professorial Fellow at Australian Catholic University. He works in contemporary philosophy, especially Philosophical Hermeneutics and Phenomenology, with a strong interest also in the analytic tradition from Wittgenstein and the Vienna Circle onward. In 2010, he brought the analytic and the phenomenological traditions into conversation in a book, translated into English as At the Heart of Reason (Northwestern University Press), in which he attempts to redefine the phenomenological method and argue for its relevance in the contemporary debates.

His first books were devoted to the topic of events from a phenomenological perspective. They are translated into English as Event and World, Event and Time and There is: The Event and the Finitude of Appearing (all three published by Fordham University Press). Claude Romano has also worked on the relations between philosophy and literature. He has published many articles on related issues and devoted a book to a phenomenological reading of the work of William Faulkner (Le chant de la vie. Phénoménologie de Faulkner, Gallimard, 2005).

His current research attempts to approach the problem of personal identity from the viewpoint of truthfulness or authenticity. It is both historical and theoretical. Claude Romano recently completed a volume on the history of the idea of ‘personal truth’, or truth ‘in life itself’, from Aristotle and Augustine to Heidegger (Être soi-même. Une autre histoire de la philosophie, Paris, Gallimard, 2019). He is now deepening this essential connection between truth and personal identity at a purely conceptual level.
