Laurie is an experienced social science researcher and research manager, who frequently collaborates with scientists from various disciplinary backgrounds on complex research initiatives. Her main research interests fall under the broad headings of social gerontology and social sustainability, focusing specifically on issues associated with community engagement and active and healthy ageing.

Laurie's research directly explores the understanding of, and accountability for, the real effects felt by older people resulting from changes in their physical, economic and social life. She has established strong collaborative partnerships with a wide variety of community, industry and government organisations to investigate the dynamics and impacts of ageing within our communities, centred around the belief that prevention rather that mitigation of impacts can be achieved through a multidisciplinary approach and the development of appropriate strategies. The majority of her research involves multidisciplinary projects that examine issues such as quality of life, engagement and well-being.
