Extend your Confirmation of Enrolment and apply for a new student visa

International students on a student visa must complete their course within the duration specified in their Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) (Standard 8 of the National Code 2018). 

The University may only extend a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) in the following circumstances:

• where documented compassionate or compelling circumstances exist;
• an intervention strategy is being implemented; or
• a student has been granted an approved deferment or suspension of study.

Important information

On 2 October 2026, the Australian Government introduced a number of new rules for Student visas (subclass 500) and Student Guardian visas (subclass 590). The rules have changed on who can apply for and be granted a visa while in Australia, and whether family members can be included in a Student visa application.

How do I obtain a new CoE ?

• complete the ACU Application for Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) (PDF, 412KB)
• forward this application to your Course Adviser and ask them to complete section E of the application form; and
• return the signed application form to your International Student Adviser for processing

How do I apply for a new student visa?

If your student visa is due to expire before you complete your course, you must ensure that you hold a valid visa for the duration of your studies.

Visit the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and complete the appropriate application form as well as the application checklist.

Higher Degree Research students (student visa subclass 500)

You will need to talk to your research supervisor(s) about extending your candidature before applying for a new student visa. Please contact the Graduate Research School to discuss this further.

Thesis examination

If you have submitted your thesis, you do not need a CoE while waiting for the results of your thesis examination. You will need to provide the Department of Home Affairs with a letter from the Graduate Research School confirming that your thesis has been submitted and an approximate timeframe for examination.

Australia Awards Scholarship students (student visa subclass 500)

You should contact your Student Contact Officer as you must have approval from Australia Awards to extend your visa. You do not need a CoE to extend your student visa.
