NilUnit rationale, description and aim
This unit examines the plurality of contemporary Australian society and educational approaches to addressing inclusivity and diversity in its many forms. Pre-service educators will analyse the role and responsibility of early childhood and primary contexts and the educator with respect to supporting the development and learning of all young children and their families within the contexts of both home and school. Students will explore a range of strategies and techniques for teaching children and supporting families in inclusive early childhood settings. Students will learn how to identify and challenge various forms of discrimination, and recognise the kinds of policies which are sensitive to all children and families within educational settings. Particular emphasis will be placed on education and children's rights in relation to Indigenous Australians and children experiencing marginalisation, and the impact of government policies on their effective education.
This unit will assist pre-service teacher to examine the plurality of contemporary Australian society and educational approaches to addressing inclusivity and diversity in its many forms, including supporting children with disabilities, children who are gifted and/or children experiencing marginalisation such as those associated with language and learning development, physical and cognitive development, socio-economic and cultural complexities, gender, sexuality and family.
