Statement from Australian Catholic University on the conflict in Israel

Like so many in the ACU family, we have been heartbroken to witness the horrifying acts of terrorism and the devastating escalation of violence in Israel and Gaza over the past week.

ACU stands in support of our community - especially our community members with ties to the region.

There is no justification for acts of terrorism or the commission of atrocities, regardless of religious or political beliefs. ACU denounces violence, hate and prejudice in all forms and remains steadfast in its commitment to open discourse, education, partnership and harmony.

Together we mourn for those whose lives have been destroyed and grieve for their suffering. We pray for the safe return of hostages, and that innocent and vulnerable people, particularly children, may be safeguarded and spared.

We join Pope Francis in his appeal for peace in the Middle East:

“Terrorism and extremism do not help to reach a solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, but fuel hatred, violence, and revenge, causing suffering to both sides.”

As a Catholic community, we support tolerance and unity across religious divides. We continue to pray for peace, respect, and dignity for all.

ACU Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Zlatko Skrbis
