Getting ahead while studying virtually

Bachelor of Information Technology student Ngoc Minh Tam shares her experience of studying virtually with ACU.

Like many international students based overseas, border measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic meant Ngoc Minh Tam’s study experience began from behind her computer at home in Vietnam.

However, despite the challenges of being thousands of kilometres away from campus, she says that studying virtually with ACU has been one of her best experiences so far.

“Some people might think studying virtually would hinder you from experiencing university life, but it has actually given me similar, if not the same, experiences as I would have studying face-to-face on campus,” Ngoc Minh Tam says.

For the Bachelor of Information Technology student, a day of study usually involves four hours of live lectures and a few hours of after class learning and activities.

“Due to the difference in time zones, I usually start my day at around 5 or 6 in the morning. I often have two or three classes a day, which include live lectures through Zoom and then tutorials where I complete activities and work with my peers to understand the lesson content.”

Ngoc Minh Tam says that the support she’s received from ACU during her time studying virtually has helped her navigate the challenges of studying from home, while enjoying her university social life and pursuing her strong passion for research.

“ACU has provided me with the best support to ensure that I have a wonderful experience while studying virtually. My lecturers are always available to provide help when I need it, and the university has given me lots of advice on how to study effectively and manage any challenges such as dealing with stress,” she says.

“Aside from academic support, I’ve had the chance to join lots of activities I’m interested in, and I have already made lots of good friends at ACU.

“I have even had the opportunity to start doing research while still in my first year of university. This is often offered to PhD students or students who are in their last year of university, but my professors have supported me to gain experience early so I can discover my areas of interest and can better prepare for my future.

“There is no doubt there are some challenges studying virtually from home. But, in my opinion, ACU offers the best environment for students to grow and develop. There are lots of people available to help you achieve great results.”
