ACU International English Language Centre: Student Peer Support Program (Sydney)

ACU students enrolled in a Bachelor Degree program can work with new International English Language (ELICOS) students to assist them in adjusting to ACU Sydney. ACU students help ELICOS students to feel more integrated and help them to build a social network with local students already in their future degree programs.

ACU students also assist our ELICOS teachers in classroom activities or in Special Interest Group workshops, and attend student social events and excursions, orientation days and graduations.

Objectives of the Program:

• Help ELICOS students to better adjust to the ACU environment;
• Help ELICOS students to build their confidence with their spoken English and pronunciation through socialization, meetups, clubs and societies;
• Introduce ELICOS students to Sydney life: transport system, opening a bank account and finding accommodation;
• Help ELICOS students to feel welcome, make friends and feel supported at ACU Sydney.

The role

We are looking for volunteers that are keen to work with international students, and who are patient, friendly and welcoming. Students should be interested in learning about other cultures and have a good understanding about ACU Sydney (culture, activities, events, and systems), so as to be able to share this knowledge with new arrivals both to ACU Sydney.

ACU student volunteers will:

• attend ELICOS Orientation Sessions and provide campus tours and information to new students.
• help teachers in communicative class activities.
• accompany ELICOS students on special events and excursions and help provide social support while interacting with local communities.
