Phonics: Theory, Research, Differentiated Instruction, and Assessment Microcredential
Overview
This course is designed for teachers, speech pathologists and other professionals working with developing readers of all ages. Upon completion, you will be able to confidently teach foundational reading skills to children learning to read (K-1) and to older students struggling with foundational reading and spelling skills.
Critical to learning to read words accurately is the ability to automatically connect a letter or sequence of letters (graphemes) to speech sounds (phonemes). Modern educators working with developing readers need to understand what phonological awareness and phonics are and how to design systematic, explicit, and evidence-based phonological awareness and phonics instruction. In this course, you will learn how to design and implement effective phonological awareness and phonics instruction for developing and struggling readers. You will also learn how to use assessments to continuously evaluate and adapt instruction to maximise its impact.
This microcredential consists of two units that cannot be completed singly. The first unit, EDER530 Phonemes and Phonics: Instruction and Assessment, provides you with a foundational knowledge of phonics and phonemic awareness, enabling you to teach and assess these areas effectively. You will discover the importance of phonics in early reading and will learn how to adapt instruction for students of different levels. The second unit, EDER531 Phonics: Effective Intervention in Primary and Secondary Schools, provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to address this issue through the development of effective phonics instruction and assessment for primary and secondary students who experience difficulty in learning foundational reading and writing skills.
