In an era of technological advancements and digital transformation, young learners are increasingly required to demonstrate STEM skills, including problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, and the ability to use data and digital technologies. Teachers play a pivotal role in preparing the next generation to meet the challenges of the future.  Science is a constantly evolving field of study that requires teachers to keep up-to-date with cutting-edge scientific discoveries and practices in order to maintain currency and accuracy in planning and teaching. Designed specifically for middle school teachers this course will provide you with inclusive, evidence-based strategies for teaching STEM that will allow you to create innovative and meaningful learning environments for students.

This microcredential consists of two units that cannot be completed singly. The first unit, EDST532 Science iSTEM, will provide you with the knowledge and confidence to apply pedagogical approaches in relation to real-world contexts that foster scientific knowledge, design thinking and evidence-informed practices in STEM classrooms. The second unit, EDST533 Leading the S in iSTEM, will equip you with the advanced leadership skills needed to build a STEM-informed culture and tailored professional learning in your school that supports your school context. You will develop the knowledge and skills to create and implement science-focused learning and teaching activities in STEM education.

  • Innovation within science, in STEM 
  • Planning, teaching, and learning in science, in STEM contexts 

Delivery: 150 hrs

Assessment: Quiz and Video Presentation

Topics in Unit 2: EDST533 Leading the S in STEM includes:

  • Building leadership in STEM education  
  • Essential capabilities for science leadership within STEM education  
  • Developing a shared understanding of the “S” in STEM 
  • Leading, planning, and teaching science in STEM 

Delivery: 150 hrs

Assessment: Quizzes and Professional 10 Week Learning Plan  

This course combines interactive and asynchronous learning components that are flexible and accessible, designed to meet the needs of busy professionals.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed a Bachelor degree in Education or a Bachelor degree and a recognised teaching qualification.
