Maths iSTEM Microcredential
Overview
Mathematics and STEM education play a pivotal role in preparing young learners to navigate emerging technologies in a contemporary society. Developed by experts in STEM education, this course gives you access to up-to-date mathematics research and will expose you to the latest teaching methods. You will gain a foundational understanding of the “Big Ideas” driving mathematics in STEM and learn how to translate this knowledge into the classroom using critical thinking to solve real-world problems, employing effective teaching practices with a strong focus on STEM leadership.
This course is designed for middle school teachers.
This microcredential consists of two units that cannot be completed singly. The first unit, EDST530 Maths iSTEM, demonstrates how mathematics can be integrated into STEM to develop critical young thinkers who can apply mathematics to solve real-world problems. Interacting with authentic data, you will work with content that can be applied in the classroom, assisting you in effective lesson planning. The second unit, EDST531 Leading the M in STEM, will develop your ability to lead mathematics teaching and learning within the context of STEM education.

Topics in Unit 1: EDST530 Maths iSTEM includes:
- Critical thinking in mathematics and the role of mathematics in STEM education
- Using mathematics to solve real-world problems within STEM contexts
- Analysing and interpreting authentic data
- Teaching and learning mathematics in STEM contexts
Delivery: 150 hrs
Assessment: Quizzes and Mathematical Modelling Task
Topics in Unit 2: Leading the M in STEM includes:
- Essential capabilities for mathematics leadership within STEM
- Leading a shared understanding of the “M” in STEM
- Leading a shared vision for a school-wide approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics in STEM
- Leading planning and teaching the “M” in STEM
Delivery: 150 hrs
Assessment: Quizzes and Professional Learning Plan
This course combines interactive and asynchronous learning components that are flexible and accessible, designed to meet the needs of busy professionals.
