Evaluating the impact of Life’s Little Treasures Foundation’s products and services for families of premature and sick babies across Australia

Completed 2026 | Organisation-specific project

Life’s Little Treasures Foundation (LLTF) is a leading Australian charity committed to supporting families of premature and sick babies. LLTF provides practical resources and emotional support through approximately 150 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) and Special Care Units (SCUs) across Australia.

These services are available both during hospital stays and after a family’s transition home. Founded by parents with the lived experience of having a premature or sick baby, LLTF’s programs are uniquely informed by a firsthand understanding of the emotional and practical challenges that families face. A core element of LLTF’s approach is fostering connection between families and others who have shared similar experiences to reduce isolation.

In partnership with ACU, LLTF evaluated its services - guidebooks, peer groups, care packs, and self-care tools - using surveys and focus groups to assess their impact on parental wellbeing and alignment with evidence-based support factors.

The research found that LLTF’s support helped parents feel more grounded and connected during the stress of neonatal care. Through their stories, it became clear that LLTF’s resources often encouraged bonding, eased anxiety and supported parents to be more involved in their baby’s care.

In the focus groups, we heard that there is a strong alignment between LLTF initiatives and key facilitators of psychological resilience. Parents highlighted the value of emotional support tools, such as affirmation cards, journaling activities, and peer support, which contributed to reduced distress and enhanced coping. LLTF resources also strongly supported early parent–infant attachment, particularly through items that enabled emotional connection during periods of separation.

The report made several recommendations for LLTF to continue the good work they already do, among them, increasing awareness and accessibility and enhancing community connection. Overall, LLTF’s offerings demonstrate substantial consistency with evidence-based factors that promote parental wellbeing in neonatal contexts.
