About paramedicine

Choose a career where you’ll make a difference every single day. As a paramedic, you’ll work on the frontline of health care and may respond to triple zero calls, provide critical care and save lives. We’ll equip you with the skills to work with emergency ambulances and health organisations in Australia and around the world. And with further study, you can have greater impact.

Access our ambulance hubs

Learning to save lives takes more than just a sound knowledge of what’s in a book. That’s why your paramedicine studies at ACU will include access to our fully fitted-out ambulances in Ballarat, Brisbane and Canberra, and a fully-functioning Ambulance hub in Melbourne.

Professional recognition

Your degree in paramedicine makes you eligible for membership of Paramedics Australasia. Our paramedic programs are also accredited by the Council of Ambulance Authorities, giving you preference over other graduates with state ambulance services.

Real-world experience

The best experience is real-life experience. When you study paramedicine with us, you’ll get more than just the theory. You’ll undertake a minimum of 360 hours of clinical practice within an emergency or simulated emergency setting.

Study university worldwide

Where in the world would you like to go? If you want to expand your horizons, you could study healthcare ethics at our Rome Campus, immerse yourself in a short-term study experience in Timor Leste, Vanuatu, or the USA, or go on semester exchange just about anywhere in the world.

Mihai Gavrilescu

Paramedicine student

“There’s a lot of practical work at ACU, which I really enjoy. Our placements are out on the road with ambulances. There’s definitely that adrenaline rush when you go to something you’ve never seen before … or there’s been a car accident. But the way in which these situations can be calmed down appeals to me. The calmer it is, the better the outcome.

“I like the problem-solving part of paramedicine and the ability to have an immediate impact. Treatment isn’t always about giving drugs or stopping the bleeding. Being supportive is treatment in itself.”

Dr Paul Fulbrook

Dr Paul Fulbrook is Professor of Nursing at ACU. He also holds a joint appointment as Nursing Director, Research and Practice Development at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, where he leads the Nursing Research and Practice Development Centre.

Within the critical care context, Dr Fulbrook has been widely published, has spoken at many international and national conferences, and is currently involved with several research projects in intensive care and emergency care.
