Work, Motherhood, and Intergenerational Dynamics: Pakistani Migrant Working Mothers in Australia

Muniza’s research explores the experiences of Pakistani migrant working mothers in Australia. It considers family relationships including between spouses, parents, and in-laws, highlighting how care, support, reciprocity, and conflict are negotiated. Grounded in paradoxical integration theory and informed by structuration, individualisation, and family obligation, the study shows how migrant working mothers navigate continuity and change, autonomy and obligation, and inclusion and exclusion across cultural contexts. Drawing on focused ethnography, the thesis contributes to scholarship on migration, family dynamics, gender relations, and social inclusion in multicultural Australia.
