Mediterranean Pasts and the American Historical Novel, 1880 – 1911

The focus of this thesis is the American historical novel in the last decades of the nineteenth and the turn of the twentieth century. This was a genre enormously popular in its own day that has now become much less visible and has in recent times been largely overlooked in literary scholarship. By focussing in particular on American engagements with the Mediterranean, this thesis will analyse ways in which the fiction of the United States in the period after the Civil War effectively renegotiated the nation’s relationship to the historical past.
