Ballarat: Delivered in a hybrid mode combining Ballarat-based and fully online units. Students typically select English or History as their secondary teaching area.

EFTSL value of units : All 10cp units in this course have an EFTSL value of 0.125. Units with a credit point (cp) value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.

Admission requirements

An applicant must comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy, which includes meeting a minimum ATAR requirement and meeting the English Language Proficiency requirements.

In addition, applicants in Victoria will be required to demonstrate suitability for teaching.

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12 level, or equivalent:

New South Wales

Prerequisites: Nil

Assumed Knowledge: A minimum of three Band 5 HSC results (including one in English), and a Mathematics Band 4 HSC result. Note: This course is structured to allow applicants to meet the three Band 5 and/or the Mathematics Band 4 entry requirements.

Queensland

Prerequisites: English (Units 3 & 4, C); General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C)

Assumed Knowledge: To study a major or minor in Mathematics: Mathematical Methods C.

Victoria

Prerequisites: English: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English;

Mathematics: Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion of two units (any study combination) of General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics OR Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics.

To study a major or minor in Mathematics: Units 3 and 4: Mathematical Methods must be added.  

OR

b. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants may be selected following an interview with the Course Adviser and staff of the campus Indigenous Higher Education Unit. They should have:

  1. minimum of three years’ work experience; or
  2. of year 12 or equivalent; or
  3. relevant tertiary study skills or successful completion of a Tertiary Communication Skills program.

Completion requirements

To qualify for the award, a student must complete 360 cp consisting of:

a.50 cp from Education Studies units (Part A)

b.60 cp from Effective Teaching units (Part B)

c.110 cp from Primary Content and Pedagogy units (Part C)

d. 80 cp from First Teaching Area units (Part D)

e.60 cp from Religious Education Teaching Area units (Part E)

f. 0 cp from ACER Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education units (Part F)

Other requirements

Professional Experience Requirements:

Students must successfully complete all professional experience components, including those embedded within individual units.

Requirements for Working with Children:

All enrolled students must obtain the necessary approvals before entering a classroom. These include:

  • Blue Card (Queensland)
  • Working with Vulnerable People Registration (Australian Capital Territory)
  • Working with Children Check (New South Wales, and Victoria)
  • International Students: Must provide police check documentation from their home country.
  • National Police Check: May be required for placements in settings other than schools.
  • Students with International Residency: Any student who has lived in another country for 12 months or more must supply a police check covering that period.


Exit points

A student who has completed the course requirements for the courses listed below may graduate with the corresponding qualification. However, none of these qualifications qualify the holder to teach in Australia.

  • Undergraduate Certificate in Educational Studies
  • Diploma in Educational Studies (Tertiary Preparation)
  • Bachelor of Educational Studies
  • Undergraduate Certificate in Liberal Arts
  • Diploma in Liberal Arts

A student who does not satisfy the LANTITE requirements may exit the course through an appropriate pathway, provided they meet the criteria for that award.

Progression requirements

Before enrolling in EDET100 Effective Teaching 1: Becoming a Teacher, students must have attempted the ACER Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education.

To be eligible to enrol in the third placement unit, EDET301 Effective Teaching 3: Engaging Learners and Managing Learning Environments, students must first complete both LNTE100 LANTITE – Literacy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students and LNTE101 LANTITE – Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students.

Students are required to follow the prescribed unit enrolment pattern outlined in the relevant Course Enrolment Guide, unless an alternative arrangement has been approved by the Course Adviser.
