Higher education is an internationally established pathway to successfully transition veterans from the military to civilian life.

It broadens personal networks and creates an avenue to gainful employment.

At ACU we assess applicants on a case-by-case basis and once you’re a student here, the Student Veteran Support Program will help smooth your transition into student life.

Entry without an ATAR

If you want to study at ACU and have served in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) we’ll assess your military service and convert this to an entry rank, similar to an ATAR. We then match that rank to the requirements of your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate course and, if it meets them, we’ll make you an offer.

As a guide, completion of general training in the ADF with two years’ experience (regardless of your military rank) will result in an entry rank of 82, which would fulfil the entry requirements for most ACU bachelor degrees. We will provide individualised assessment of experience and qualifications to determine the highest entry rank available to you.

Recognition of prior learning

During your time in the ADF you went through rigorous training and gained valuable work and life experience. We give you the opportunity to receive credit for this service.

We also recognise the challenge involved in transitioning into tertiary education, and to help you we’re the first Australian university to formally recognise the courses you’ve completed during your service.

Understand Recognition of Prior Learning

Core curriculum unit UNCC300

In recognition of your service to country and community, ACU will grant you credit for the Core Curriculum unit, Justice and Change in a Global World (UNCC300). This credit is available for most undergraduate degrees at ACU.

What documents do I need?

You'll need to share your name and contact details, as well as your ADF service statement and educational history. Don’t forget to tell us which course/s you are interested in. We will then contact you to provide personalised assistance with the ACU application process. Applications through the Veteran Entry Program will be automatically registered to the Student Veteran Support Program.

Can I talk to anyone?

If at any point you need assistance with your VEP application you can reach out to our Student Veteran Services team at studentveteranservices@acu.edu.au. For general enquiries we encourage you to contact AskACU on 1300 275 228.

Your VEP application

Applications through the VEP are handled through our admissions team with applicants receiving early offers. You can check key application and enrolment dates anytime.

Some key points to consider:

  1. Not all courses are available to commence in Semester 1.
  2. Some of our health courses, including nursing and paramedicine only have a Semester 1 intake. Veterans can apply at any time, and we will make offers for the next available intake.
  3. Some courses are very popular and have limited places available – in particular nursing, paramedicine and some of our health courses. We recommend applying early (before December) to maximise your chances of securing a place.
  4. All VEP applications are assessed with a view to providing you with personal advice as to your best study options. We aim to respond to your application within one week, but at busy times of the year this timeframe may increase.
