Services

ACU Melbourne Health Clinic (Fitzroy) – Speech Pathology Services:

Do you, or does someone who you know, experience communication difficulties?

Challenges in communicating can arise from a range of health conditions and general developmental causes, resulting in symptoms such as speech delays, language impairments, difficulty pronouncing words, problems when socialising, impaired voice quality, stuttering and more.

What We Offer:

Our Melbourne ACU Health Clinic runs a range of Speech Pathology services that cater for children and adults of all ages. This includes face to face therapy and our Telehealth service.

We provide services for individuals who have difficulties in communicating. We are mindful of each person’s needs and work with them to achieve their communication goals. Therapy can target specific areas, such as improved language, speech clarity and voice quality with the aim to improve a person’s quality of life. All of our therapy is conducted by student clinicians under the supervision of qualified and experienced Speech Pathologists.

Telehealth offers many positives. It can:
  • Make therapy more accessible for all, regardless of location.
  • Increase family, carer and / or parent involvement.
  • Increase engagement in sessions.
  • Ease stress, providing comfort and a feeling of security in your own home.
Signs Your Child May Need a Speech Pathologist:
  • Do you or others find it difficult to understand what the child is saying?
  • Does the child have difficulty interacting with peers the same age?
  • Does the child have difficulty following directions or instructions?
  • Does the child pronounce words differently than same age peers?
  • Does the child use short or incomplete sentences?
  • Does the child have difficulty at school academically, behaviourally or socially?
Signs That You or another Adult You Know May Benefit from Speech Pathology:
  • A recent neurological diagnosis such as a stroke, Parkinson’s Disease or brain injury.
  • Frequent voice loss or changes in vocal quality. Our program also has a particular focus on voice and voice care and is particularly suitable for people who depend on verbal communication in their professional roles, like nurses, allied health professionals, teachers, coaches, actors, singers and more.
  • Ongoing concerns around speaking fluently.
  • Difficulties reading and naming things, or in being understood by others.
  • Problems in understanding and remembering information.

Latest News!

We are so pleased to tell you about our latest Therapy Program, specifically developed for people living with Parkinson’s Disease.

SPEAK OUT! and the LOUD Crowd:

Up to 89% of people with Parkinson’s Disease develop some difficulty communicating at some stage. SPEAK OUT! is a therapy program tailored to people with Parkinson’s disease to improve their voice and speech. In this program, speech is transformed from an automatic function to an intentional task. SPEAK OUT! is usually completed over four weeks. Over this four-week period, clients report improvements in their speaking, their ability to be heard, and their overall quality of life.

LOUD Crowd is the group therapy portion of the program and meets weekly. Sessions provide maintenance for skills obtained during SPEAK OUT! and are a source of camaraderie for members.

When and where can I receive services?

SPEAK OUT! is offered on most weekdays during our University semesters. We run sessions at the ACU Speech Pathology Health Clinic in Melbourne and also via Telehealth. Our LOUD Crowd group meets weekly, currently via Telehealth.

Please feel free to contact us above for further information about appointments.
