To Set fire to the Sea Sinead Kennedy
15 – 28 June
To Set Fire to the Sea explores mandatory and indefinite immigration detention for refugees and asylum seekers in Australia.
It is a response to the Australian government’s hysteria around refugees and obsession with border control amidst a global climate of mass displacement, xenophobia and border paranoia. Taking place in a country with a complicated history of migration, identity and belonging, these are glimpses of the ongoing life and conversation with friends who are being held in the immigration system.
This project attempts to communicate the personal experiences and dehumanising processes of this system’s slow bureaucratic violence.
Kevin G Rowley – For those of us who came in late
7 - 8 July
Artworks by the late Kevin G Rowley. Kevin painted with stencils and spray cans (2010-16) “because life is short”. This was a period of illness and impatience, contrasting with his usual methodical work as a scientist. The result is emotional and provocative work, which considers Europeans, Scientists and Asylum Seekers as migrants to Australia, and our relationship to the land, its people and animals. He also celebrated personal heroes in street art, and used digital photography of hand-modelled scenes to create a series of allegorical zines, "Town of Asylum".
4 - 5 July
The Push is a 2-day music Industry event organised by the City of Yarra at ACU and ten premier live music venues in Collingwood and Fitzroy.
In 2018 Victoria’s new music industry summit will launch as the pre-eminent forum for provocative discourse and the delivery of progressive thinking about the future of the contemporary music industry. It will be bold, dynamic and forward facing, with a highly valued role in thought leadership, individual artistic and professional development and business outcomes for the Victorian music sector.
