The Solomon Islands Teacher Education Immersion Program is a collaborative partnership supporting teachers, students and communities through shared learning in local schools. It focuses on long-term relationships, cultural understanding and inclusive education.

The Solomon Islands Teacher Education Immersion Program brings ACU pre-service teachers (PSTs) and Solomon Islands educators together in local classrooms through a four-week immersion experience in Honiara.

Established in 2009, the program has involved over 235 ACU students working alongside teachers in Catholic partner schools, including Bishop Epalle Catholic School, in collaboration with the Catholic Education Office of the Archdiocese of Honiara. Rather than a traditional placement, the program is built on shared learning, cultural exchange and mutual respect.

Through this partnership, participants strengthen teaching practice, support inclusive education, including sign language training for nearly 1,000 people, and contribute to positive outcomes for schools and communities.

Why it matters

Schools in the Solomon Islands often work with limited resources and in highly multilingual settings, where English may be a second or third language for students.

This partnership supports local teachers through professional exchange, while helping ACU students develop the skills and confidence needed to teach in diverse and complex classroom environments. The program also promotes human dignity and inclusion, particularly for students and communities who are often marginalised.
