ACU safeguarding children and young people

About safeguarding children and young people

Explore the elements that support, govern or impede child-safe environments. Designed for graduates and professionals engaged in working with children and young people – including teachers and leaders in Catholic education institutions – our safeguarding children and young people programs address the legislative, regulatory, and governance frameworks of child safety. As a graduate, you’ll develop an understanding of positive and preventative cultures and practices, build your knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues, and learn how to respond effectively to abuse and the impact on families, friends and colleagues.

Proactive response

Our safeguarding children and young people offerings are a proactive response to the current moral, social and political imperatives to secure the safety and wellbeing of all young people. They draw on research from ACU’s Institute of Child Protection Studies, as well as expertise from across our four faculties and external partners. Learn more by visiting our Safeguarding Children and Young People portal.

Pick your pathway

Choose a pathway that aligns with your professional role or graduate study area. Examples include legal frameworks and governance, theology of childhood, education and prevention, implications for professional practice, and ethics, values and practices. We can also develop a tailored program to meet the specific needs of your organisation.

Decide to specialise

Study child safety as either a specialisation in a Graduate Certificate in Education, or our Graduate Certificate in Safeguarding Children and Young People. We also offer a range of related programs in social work, youth work, family and systemic therapy, counselling, not-for-profit management, and nursing.

Flexible study options

Balance your work, study, life and community commitments. Our safeguarding children courses are designed for graduates and working professionals. Choose the study option that’s right for you. Study part-time, take a single unit instead of an entire award, or future-proof your learning for more advanced study later on. Online delivery options may also be available.
