At ACU, we understand that university life can be challenging, especially for those who live with a disability, medical condition, or have carer responsibilities. To support our diverse community, we have created Low Sensory Retreats across our campuses (with Blacktown still in development). These provide a peaceful space for those who need a break from the sensory overload that can often come with university life.

Our retreats are designed to offer a calming environment where you can step away from overwhelming sensory input, such as noise, bright lighting, large crowds, or strong smells. Whether you need a moment to relax, manage pain or stress, the Low Sensory Retreats are here to help.

We encourage you to make use of these retreats when you need a break from overwhelming sensory stimuli. It's our way of helping you prioritise your well-being, as you navigate the demands of university life.

What to expect in the retreats

Each Low Sensory Retreat has been thoughtfully curated with comfort in mind. In each of our retreats, you'll find:

  • bean bags
  • recliners
  • adjustable lighting
  • moveable furniture
  • fidget toys and
  • weighted blankets.

These spaces are designed to provide a quiet, calming environment that encourages relaxation and self-care.

What shouldn't I do in a low sensory space?

While the Low Sensory Retreats offer a peaceful environment for everyone's use, it's important to note that they are not intended as study areas or communal hangouts.
