This Australian Research Council Linkage project, Improving teacher assessment capability using scaled annotated exemplars of achievement standards in online moderation, aims to generate new knowledge regarding standards in action and the metacognition of judgement making through an innovative approach utilising psychometric scaling and online moderation. Expected outcomes of the project include the development of scaled work samples exemplifying A-E standards of achievement, refined methods for the consistency and comparability of assessment decisions, and a new approach to moderating teacher judgements. The project will involve around 370 middle years teachers to address the perennial issue of the dependability of teacher judgement.

The project is led by Associate Professor Lenore Adie with an internationally renowned research team of Professor Claire Wyatt-Smith (Australian Catholic University - ACU), Professor Michele Haynes (Australian Catholic University), Associate Professor Stephen Humphry and Professor David Andrich (University of Western Australia - UWA), Associate Professor Chris DeLuca (Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada) and Mr Terry Gallagher (Queensland Department of Education). The project is partnering with the Queensland Department of Education, the Western Australian School Curriculum and Standards Authority (WA SCSA), and Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA).

The team draws on existing strong relationships between the universities and Partner Organisations. The project fits within a specific ACU, ILSTE research focus on teachers’ assessment work, standards and moderation. UWA contributes an equally rich research environment, where Educational Measurement is an emerging field of strategic significance. The project commences a new collaboration with Queen’s University, Ontario, which is recognised as one of Canada’s outstanding research institutions with a plan to advance the university’s vision as Canada’s research-intensive university that delivers a transformative student learning experience.

The Partner Organisations on this project, Qld Dept of Education, WA SCSA, and CEWA are the primary external connections. They are committed to collaborative partnerships that promote world-class educational practices focussing on teacher pedagogical knowledge and progressing learning for all students. This project directly aligns with Qld Dept of Education, WA SCSA and CEWA research priorities in assessment, with direct involvement of staff in the project.
