Jamie Sherson is a Lecturer and Researcher in the National School of Education at Australian Catholic University, specialising in educational studies and teacher motivation. His research, grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), examines how school-based placements shape pre-service teachers’ development, motivation, and persistence in the profession.
He is particularly interested in identifying practical ways that mentors, schools, and initial teacher education programs can better support future teachers during placement. His work aims to strengthen both the quality of professional experience and the sustainability of the teaching workforce.
Jamie also has a growing research and practice focus on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, particularly in relation to teacher workload, pedagogical innovation, and the ethical integration of generative AI in school and university contexts. He works closely with industry partners to explore how AI can support teachers while maintaining a strong focus on student learning, equity, and professional judgment.
He is the Academic Lead of the Step Up into Teaching (SUIT) program, an equity-focused initiative supporting Year 11 and 12 students from underrepresented backgrounds to access supported pathways into teaching degrees.
