Australian Catholic University (ACU) is offering one full-time PhD scholarship package to undertake research at the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry, Melbourne on translation in Late Antiquity.

What you'll investigate

The successful applicant will work on an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project 'Translation and Transformation in Late Antiquity' to investigate how translation in Late Antiquity evolved while communicating and shaping new knowledge, and analyse translation across a diverse range of political, social, religious, linguistic cultural groups in Late Antiquity.

The research will either involve a case study or studies, drawn from both Biblical translations and translations of theological, philosophical, historical, and literary knowledge from the fourth to the sixth centuries CE.

The PhD candidate will be an integral member of the project, working with the research team, led by Assoc. Prof. Michael Hanaghan, and including Assoc. Prof. Stephen Carlson, Prof. Bronwen Neil (Macquarie University) and Prof. Andy Cain (UC Boulder).

Opportunities for methodological and theoretical mentoring and collaborative publishing will be facilitated. The candidate will also help organise and participate in a conference at ACU's Rome campus.


Scholarship package

The successful applicant will be awarded a scholarship package consisting of:

Stipend scholarship A$34,315 per annum (tax-free, indexed) for up to 3.5 years, providing financial stability while you focus on your research.
Tuition fee scholarship Full tuition fee coverage valued at approximately A$34,728 per annum for up to 3.5 years.
Industry experience Gain real-world experience with a minimum of 60 full-time equivalent days working alongside industry partners on research and development activities.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) * Comprehensive health insurance that provides access to essential medical services throughout your stay in Australia, while ensuring you meet all visa requirements. Learn more
