Content

Topics will include:

·            Catholic schools as centres of evangelisation: Exploration of post-conciliar Church documents and contemporary literature; analysis of the challenges and implications of the contemporary cultural landscape; the critical role of teachers and leaders in staff and student formation.

·            Creating favourable conditions for evangelisation in a Catholic school: Examination of contemporary frameworks and interrelated components of evangelisation - both implicit and explicit - including high-impact elements such as peer-with-peer youth ministry and staff and leader formation, student retreats, liturgy and prayer, service and justice initiatives, World Youth Day and other youth festivals.

·            Catechesis and student formation models: Study of the Catholic Schools Youth Ministry four phase model including student curriculum units of study and youth ministry pathways from school to parish and Church ministries. Contemporary catechesis models for primary school are explored including incorporating retreat experiences, regular classroom formation and peer-to-peer ministry.

·            Animating evangelisation in Catholic schools, parishes and other Church ministries: Development of contemporary skills in student ministry and leadership.

·            Leading school-based investigations: Use of a school evangelisation assessment instrument to evaluate current practices and identify pathways from school to parish and Church ministries.

·            The forming of teachers and leaders in evangelisation:

o  Teachers and school leaders – Engagement with resources and professional formation programs; school-based planning tools and exercises.

o  Youth ministers and Church leaders – Access to resources and professional formation networks; use of parish and movement-based planning tools and exercises.

Learning and teaching strategy and rationale

This unit is delivered in multi-mode (online and face-to-face) and adopts an active learning approach to develop knowledge and skills in building Catholic schools as centres of evangelisation in partnership with parishes and ecclesial movements. Students participate in asynchronous online modules and synchronous webinars, enabling flexible engagement for those in full-time work.

The learning design supports achievement of unit learning outcomes, including critical reflection on Church vision (LO1), analysis of contemporary evangelisation practices (LO2), development of practical ministry skills (LO3), and strategic planning for mission pathways (LO4).

Where required, the unit may be delivered fully or partly face-to-face through lectures and workshops. All students access digital resources via the Canvas learning management system, supporting both online and in-person participation.

Teaching and learning activities are aligned with assessment and designed to encourage active participation, while remaining responsive to diverse student contexts.

As a 10-credit point unit, students are expected to complete approximately 150 hours of study across the semester, including reading, reflection, discussions, webinars, workshops, multimedia engagement, and completion of assessment tasks.
