Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit is designed to provide pre-service teachers with an introduction to the field of The Arts in Education. Experiences in the areas of Music and Visual Arts education develop the pre-service teacher's foundational knowledge and understandings of the distinctive nature of the Arts subject disciplines. Theoretical concepts, arts practice, pedagogical principles and curriculum structures within Music and Visual Arts are examined and applied in the evaluation, design and implementation of learning experiences that are responsive to the needs of diverse learners in primary school settings.

This unit aims to develop Pre-service teachers’ critical appreciation of the unique contributions the arts make to society and how these contributions can be engaged with and interpreted in primary school settings.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

LO1 - demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of Music and Visual Arts as distinct forms, and of their place in society and within the Australian Curriculum: The Arts Primary (GA5; APST 2.1).

LO2 - demonstrate knowledge of the distinct pedagogies of the disciplines of Music and Visual Arts and their theoretical underpinnings (GA5; APST 1.2, 2.1)

LO3 - locate, conceptualise, synthesise, evaluate and develop a range of resources, including digital resources, for engaging students in their learning in Music and Visual Arts (GA5, GA8, GA10; APST 1.3, 1.5, 2.1, 3.4)

LO4 - design and implement learning sequences employing a range of teaching strategies, to engage students with diverse learning needs in Music and Visual Arts (GA5, GA7, GA8; APST 1.3, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1)

LO5 - demonstrate skills and understandings of assessment as strategies for enhancing learning in the Music and Visual Arts (GA5, GA8; APST 5.1).

On successful completion of this unit, pre-service teachers should be able to:

1.5 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities. 

2.1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area.

2.2 Organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence.

2.3 Use curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge to design learning sequences and lesson plans.

3.1 Set learning goals that provide achievable challenges for students of varying abilities and characteristics.

3.2 Plan lesson sequences using knowledge of student learning, content and effective teaching strategies.

Topics will include:

  • The concepts, substance and structure particular to Music and Visual Arts
  • The Australian Curriculum: The Arts Primary and other curriculum policy and content in Music and Visual Arts
  • Practices particular to Music and Visual Arts
  • The role of Music and Visual Arts in society
  • Key pedagogical approaches in Music and Visual Arts and their theoretical underpinnings
  • Examples of a range of works / repertoire in Music and Visual Arts appropriate to primary school settings
  • Planning, implementing and evaluating learning experiences in Music and Visual Arts
  • Catering to the learning strengths and needs of diverse learners in Music and Visual Arts
  • An overview of outcomes-based assessment in Music and Visual Arts
  • The integration of information and communication technologies in Music and Visual Arts.

Learning and teaching strategy and rationale

Pre-service teachers will be involved in a variety of teaching-learning strategies to progress and demonstrate their understandings in this unit. Participants will be involved in a variety of teaching-learning strategies to support learning, including:

  • face-to-face lectures and / or online lectures (synchronous and asynchronous)
  • tutorials and practical workshops including classroom and off-site activities
  • collaborative and co-operative learning opportunities
  • assessment tasks.

This is a 10-credit point unit and has been designed to ensure that the time needed to complete the required volume of learning to the requisite standard is approximately 150 hours in total across the semester (or equivalent in intensive mode). There is a normal expectation of 36 hours of directed study and the total contact hours should not exceed 36 hours. Directed study might include lectures, tutorials, webinars, podcasts etc. The balance of the hours then become private study.

Technology Enhanced Learning

The unit will include a Learning Environment Online (LEO) site to enhance teaching and learning, as well as in assessment, as a means of communication, production and feedback.

Assessment strategy and rationale

The assessment tasks and their weightings are designed to allow pre-service teachers to progressively demonstrate achievement against the unit learning outcomes and demonstrate attainment of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. The unit focuses on developing understanding of, and skills across the professional knowledge, practice and engagement needed to meet expectations of the Graduate Attributes.

Minimum Achievement Standards

The assessment tasks for this unit are designed to demonstrate achievement of each learning outcome. In order to pass this unit, participants are required to submit and participate in all assessment tasks.

The total assessment tasks will amount to the equivalent of 4,000 words.

Assessment Task 1: Music

Develop a sequence of 3 learning activities in Music. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • teaching strategies appropriate to Music;
  • appropriate resources and strategies, including ethical use of ICT, to meet the needs of diverse learners in Music; and
  • assessment strategies for learning in Music

Part B: Critical Reflection (Individual)

Write a reflection on your professional learning from your experience of completing Part A. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the concepts, substance and structure of Music and the Music curriculum;
  • major Music pedagogical approaches, and their theoretical underpinnings.

Assessment Task 2: Visual Arts

Part A: Visual Arts Education Practice journal.

Develop a Visual Arts Education Practice Journal that documents your exploration of the Visual Arts curriculum and its application to primary school classrooms. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the concepts, substance and structure of Visual Arts and the Visual Arts curriculum;
  • teaching strategies appropriate to Visual Arts;
  •  appropriate resources and strategies, including ethical use of ICT, to meet the needs of diverse learners in Visual Arts; and
  • assessment strategies for learning in Visual Arts,

Part B: Critical Reflection:

Write an individual reflection on your professional learning from the experience of completing Part A. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the concepts, substance and structure of Visual Arts and the Visual Arts curriculum;
  • pedagogies/teaching strategies appropriate to Visual Arts, and their theoretical underpinnings.
