Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit explores the role of the paramedic in drug administration. It will provide a deeper understanding of pharmacology, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and alternatives to drugs currently used in practice. The focus will be on the use of different pharmacological agents in the pre-hospital environment, related to specific conditions with scope to consider a range of alternative approaches. Students will be introduced to clinical trials and consultation processes used to evaluate the effectiveness of various drugs as evidence evolves. Consideration will also be given to leading change in relation to pharmacology in paramedic practice, education and public health.
