Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit questions the viability of the neoliberal policy prescriptions of free trade as it articulates with equitable and sustainable development. Capitalist and modernist development policies and programs are critiqued in terms of alternatives to capitalist development, including post-development theory. Using case studies from a variety of countries that have implemented non-capitalist development policies, we examine approaches that operate within capitalist development discourse, as well as those that articulate with capitalist development, such as fair trade.
