Unit rationale, description and aim

To thoroughly understand the biological sciences, it is essential that one has a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of biology. This fundamental training then underpins the development of an extended understanding in the individual's chosen field of expertise. This unit introduces students to the idea of 'what is life'; basic genetic processes; the principles of evolution; and the diversity of life. The aim of this unit is to provide a firm basis for further studies in the diverse fields of biology.
