Overview

The teaching area in mathematics is designed to provide you with a broad introduction to the study of traditional and contemporary mathematics. Highlights include introductions to cryptography, project management, networks, mathematical modelling, and finance. The major also covers the traditional areas required by those intending to become primary or secondary teachers, as teaching of mathematics from K-12 is a high demand field and the demand will grow in the future. The teaching area can act as a pathway to becoming a secondary-school maths teacher when combined with a tertiary teaching qualification.

Completion requirements

Students in the

  • Bachelor of Education (Secondary) must complete:

First teaching area:

  • 60 cp from Mathematics Discipline Area units (Part A)
  • 20 cp from Mathematics Undergraduate Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) units (Part C.1)

OR

Second teaching area:

  • 40 cp from Mathematics Discipline area units (Part B)
  • 20 cp from Mathematics Undergraduate Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) units (Part C.1)


  • Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary) must complete:

First Teaching area:

  • 60 cp from Mathematics Discipline Area units (Part A)
  • 20 cp from Mathematics Undergraduate Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) units (Part C.1)


  • Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts must complete:
  • 20 cp from Mathematics Undergraduate Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) units (Part C.1)

*Please note students should also complete the Mathematics Major (First Teaching Area) or Minor (Secondary Teaching Area) as part of the Bachelor of Arts
