ACU’s Caitlin Fitzgibbon has been awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship and selected for the Sir William Kilpatrick Sponsorship to learn how nurses contribute to and enhance ambulance services internationally.
Dr Fitzgibbon, a senior lecturer and nurse-paramedic, will travel to Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands to investigate how Australia could better use the skills of nurse-paramedics in ambulance services and the wider health system.
She said the Fellowship would provide an opportunity to explore ambulance workforce models that utilise nursing expertise, with the aim of informing future roles for dual-qualified clinicians that could strengthen out-of-hospital care delivery in Australia.
“By learning from international approaches, I hope to identify practical insights that can inform future workforce development in Australia and strengthen the role of dual-qualified nurse-paramedics within ambulance services and the broader health system,” Dr Fitzgibbon said.
“I look forward to learning from international ambulance services and health systems so Australia can better support dual-qualified nurse-paramedics to use the full extent of their skills and training.”
Dr Fitzgibbon’s career spans emergency nursing, ambulance services, education and research. Her PhD explored the experiences of dual-qualified nurse-paramedics working within Australian ambulance services.
