Teaching student Rubinsha is studying a Bachelor of Early Childhood (Birth to 5 Years). She’s got big plans to take her learning back to her home country of Nepal—but for now, she’s studying, working and exploring life in Sydney.
Rubinsha, a student of the ACU Bachelor of Early Childhood (Birth to 5 years) came to ACU seeking new perspectives on early childhood teaching. Immediately, she says, she was inspired by the Australian approach to education, which emphasises play-based learning in the early childhood years.
“In Australia, there are lots of different strategies to boost children’s writing skills through reading, play and creative activities. I’m really learning that the early years are so important to shape a child’s future,” she says.
The ACU classroom has also been a gateway to new social opportunities, and to activities that have given Rubinsha the chance to apply her learning in real-world scenarios. She has particularly enjoyed making friends through her groupwork assignments and she also volunteered to read with young children as part of Australia’s annual Book Week celebrations.
Immersing herself in ACU life and study has been made easier by the fact that she received a scholarship from ACU, a partial tuition waiver for high-achieving students.
“When I applied, I wasn’t sure that I was going to get it. When I heard I’d been successful, I was like, is this for real?” she says.
“I feel like I can concentrate on my studies while also enjoying my social life and exploring Australia at the same time.”
Rubinsha’s academic achievements have also helped her to be noticed by prospective employers. In an effort to gain professional experience in a teaching environment, she successfully applied for a part-time role at a childcare centre.
This outcome was in part due to the support she received via the ACU UniHub, an online resource that connects students with practical and academic support that can help them thrive at university and beyond. Now, she’s applying her classroom learning in a real-world scenario and building vital teaching experience that will prepare her for the future.
“I now feel like I’m implementing what I’ve been learning in my degree, all the lectures and practical experiences, into my part-time work,” she says.
When she finishes her degree, Rubinsha’s goal is to take what she’s learnt back to Nepal. She wants to make a difference in the early childhood education sector by increasing access to quality early learning.
“ACU has given me the skills, the knowledge and the confidence to begin a very rewarding career in early childhood education,” she says.
“With a love for children, creativity, and inclusivity, I want to strengthen Nepal’s future by supporting children’s learning and wellbeing.”
