ACU welcomes His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV

Australian Catholic University welcomes His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as he begins his papacy.

ACU Chancellor, the Honourable Martin Daubney AM KC, said that the university joined the global Catholic community in offering heartfelt congratulations to Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States and Peru as he assumes leadership of the Church.

“We extend a warm welcome to His Holiness Pope Leo on his election as Bishop of Rome and Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church,” Mr Daubney said.

“His Holiness, who has taken the name Leo, is the second pope from the Americas and the first Augustinian pope.

“This is a moment of profound spiritual significance for us, and indeed all Catholics around the world, and a time of renewed hope and guidance.

“We offer our prayers for Pope Leo as his begins his papal ministry and leads the Church with wisdom and compassion.”

ACU Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Zlatko Skrbis said the university looked forward to continuing the close relationship between ACU and the Holy See, under the leadership of His Holiness Pope Leo.

“As a pope from the Americas, his selection reflects the significance and vitality of a region that is increasingly shaping our world and the Church,” Professor Skrbis said.

“We share his commitment to strengthening dialogue and the defence of human rights in a world in need of hope and unity.

“We rejoice that His Holiness will continue to build on the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, encouraging unity in the pursuit of a more compassionate world. We join with people around the world in offering our prayers for the Holy Father as he begins the task of leading the Catholic Church.”
