ShareA new ACU collaboration will help preschoolers access robotic tutors designed to give them a head start to their literacy and numeracy learning.
ACU's STEM Centre of Education Excellence has partnered with City of Parramatta Libraries, Cincinnati University, Van Robotics, and the Brainary to provide children with access to industry leading Abii AI robots.
The initiative was launched at Parramatta Library with an event opened by local member and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, the Hon Dr Andrew Charlton.
ACU STEM Centre lead Professor Robert Tai said the initiative aimed to familiarise preschoolers - particularly those from culturally diverse and low socio-economic backgrounds - with fundamental literacy and numeracy concepts.
"We want to offer Abii as a service to the community for young families to have access to early childhood tutorials in literacy and numeracy," Professor Tai said.
"Early exposure and experience with literacy and numeracy concepts will help preschoolers to hit the ground running when they start kindergarten and school.
"Our STEM Centre is committed to offering services that promote these important learning areas and upskill people of all ages, and this includes helping pre-schoolers to become acquainted with basic but fundamental skills."
The Abii robots, which deliver personalised and interactive literacy and numeracy sessions, will be accessible through the Parramatta library network.
Professor Tai said the project was one of several the STEM Centre of Education Excellence was working on to strengthen ACU's leadership in key areas of learning and research.
"While we are preparing to start works on our purpose-built STEM Centre at the Strathfield campus, we are forging ahead with exciting projects and partnerships," he said.
"The innovative centre will provide a range of cutting-edge programs and courses for preschoolers, junior and senior school students, educators, ACU students, and community members of all ages to boost their STEM knowledge, skills and experiences.
"We are also pursuing collaborative STEM research opportunities between our many experts in the field and national and international partners, which will continue to cement ACU's role as a leader in these vital, evolving, and dynamic learning areas."
