Statement from ACU on Bondi Beach tragedy

Yesterday, our Australian community witnessed terrible and unspeakable acts of violence committed at Bondi Beach.

Our prayers are with the victims and their families, the injured and their families, and all who have been impacted by this shocking event, including the police, paramedics and other first responders.

This act of terrorism against people gathered in peaceful celebration is nothing less than a fundamental assault on the dignity of the human person and the freedom to worship without fear.

ACU respectfully endorses the remarks of Australian Catholic Bishops Conference President Archbishop Timothy Costelloe in his statement this morning that “the twisted motives behind those who perpetrated these terrible acts are now clearly linked with the scourge of antisemitism”.

On the eve of Chanukah, and as Christians prepare to celebrate Christmas, this is a painful reminder of the need for religious tolerance, mutual respect and peace.

We reaffirm our commitment to dialogue, tolerance and understanding between people of all faiths. We must continue to work together to build a society where every person can live and worship in safety and dignity.

This sacred season calls us to be bearers of light, hope and compassion. As a Catholic community, we pray for peace, respect, and dignity for all.
