ACU congratulates Archbishop Coleridge

Archbishop Mark Coleridge has been elected as the new President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC).

More than 40 bishops elected Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge as President and Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP as Vice-President of the ACBC at a plenary meeting in Sydney last week.

The ACBC is a collegial assembly of the Bishops of Australia, and its leaders serve a two-year term. They take up their role on 10 May.

ACU Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Greg Craven AO GCSG welcomed the appointments and extended congratulations on behalf of the University community.

“ACU enjoys a warm relationship with ACBC, and in particular with the bishops within whose dioceses we operate, including Archbishops Coleridge and Fisher.

“Archbishop Coleridge has established his place as a leading voice in both the Catholic world and in broader public life. I congratulate him on his election and I am confident he will bring his wisdom integrity and integrity to the role.

“Archbishops Coleridge and Fisher offer a strong combination to lead the Church in Australia.”

Professor Craven acknowledged the contribution Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart had made during his tenure as President of the ACBC.

“Archbishop Hart has been a very important voice for the bishops in Australia over many complex issues in the last six years.

“The University looks forward to maintaining our close association with all of the bishops in the years ahead,” he said.
