St. Merkorious Charity aims to address poverty at its root. They strive to create lasting change in the lives of those facing hardship — by not only meeting urgent needs but also empowering individuals to break the cycle of poverty for good.

Founded in 2013 with a vision rooted in love, compassion, and tolerance, St. Merkorious doesn't just feed people - they restore dignity, create connection, and empower communities to thrive. At St. Merkorious Charity, students will work directly with communities experiencing food insecurity across Greater Sydney, gaining invaluable insights into how nutritious food, delivered with compassion and dignity, transforms lives and inspires hope.

The role

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Experience the real-world application of community food relief models, providing approximately 2,500 fresh, nutritious meals weekly alongside food and dry hampers.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of poverty, food insecurity, and the complex factors affecting disadvantaged individuals and families across metropolitan Sydney.
  • Gain exposure to both discreet client services (private home deliveries) and community outreach program (regular community meals in Parramatta, Rhodes, and Woolloomooloo).
  • Build professional networks across community services, public health, social work, and not-for-profit operations sectors.
  • Enhance your skills in compassionate service delivery, cultural sensitivity, and creating environments where every person feels valued and heard.
