The program is an initiative run as part of the ACU & Order of Malta Mobile Community Hub project. The Read to Learn program was launched in 2023 at Preston North East primary School to assist the school in building the reading capacities and good study habits of children who may not have the opportunity to read at home with their parents and/ or whose parents speak English as a second language.

The Read to Learn program aims to:

  • Provide a safe learning environment where children are supported by tutors to improve their literacy and numeracy skills and promote success in education.
  • Build children's educational aspirations through positive role-modelling and mentoring.
  • Provide opportunities for building connections to further social and emotional skills.

The role

ACU students will work in small groups with students from grade 3 - 6. In this tutoring / mentoring role, ACU students will be expected to coach and assist students to complete reading activities as instructed by their classroom teacher.

The Read to Learn program operates within a school where over 50% of students speak English as a second language. In addition, data identifies that 1 in 2 students receives government funding as a result of poverty. ACU students must demonstrate their commitment to the inclusion, wellbeing, dignity, and success of people from disadvantaged and/or marginalised communities.

This is a face-to-face community engagement opportunity.
