Unit rationale, description and aim

To be a competent Exercise Scientist, the knowledge and skills students have gained must be able to be transferred to a professional context, with increasing autonomy and confidence. Professional Experience 2 provides students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and attributes of an exercise professional in a work context and gain the necessary experience under the supervision of qualified professionals. Continuing from Professional Experience 1 (EXSC388), experiential learning through real-world professional experience will further enable students to demonstrate competency measured through professional standards set for ESSA Exercise Scientist accreditation. By undertaking further professional experience hours, students will critically reflect upon their professional practice through feedback from their supervisors. Furthermore, students will demonstrate application of knowledge and skills to operate and communicate effectively and be able to integrate and apply their learning to help support client's needs as well as understanding the commitment to ongoing professional development throughout their careers. The aim of the unit is to continue to provide an authentic learning experience in which students integrate evidence-based learnings in applied professional settings, in order to meet the ESSA Professional Practice graduate outcomes required for Exercise Science Accreditation and to evaluate their readiness for professional practice on graduation.

Content

Topics will include:  

  • Professional development 
  • Critical reflection of competency, based on a variety of feedback 
  • Telehealth 
  • Exercise science practice- clinical exercise delivery 
  • Working safely with clinical populations 
  • Professional communication with all involved- clients, carers, coworkers and other allied health/medical professionals. 
  • Preparing for an OSCE 


Unit content also includes satisfactory completion of professional experience placements to meet ESSA Exercise Scientist accreditation requirements.

Assessment strategy and rationale

As the capstone unit, EXSC389 draws upon both internal and placement experiences to facilitate continual reflection upon professional practice and skills, promoting professional growth. The assessment strategy aligns with the concepts of job-readiness, actively doing the job of an exercise professional and continuing professional development.  

Assessment Task 1 Starts students on a lifelong continuing education journey by researching and creating a Professional Development resource

Assessment Task 2 Students deliver an evidence-based service and effectively communicate results with all parties.  

Graded hurdle 1- Capstone Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).  Students demonstrate competency in discipline knowledge through a mock case scenario and justify their application and critical thinking skills through an oral defence and practical demonstration.  

Hurdle Task 2- Completion of all practicum requirements in order to demonstrate competency as an Exercise Scientist and meeting ESSA practicum standards.

*For the Graded Hurdle Task (Assessment 3), students will have a maximum of 3 attempts to pass. Students who fail the hurdle task will be provided additional attempts to pass at a time referred to on the Learning Management System. The maximum possible grade for the second or third attempt is 50%. Students will only be offered a second/third attempt if a hurdle grade of 50% will allow them to pass the unit overall.

**If any professional experience placement is graded unsatisfactory, students will have 2 additional attempts to satisfactorily complete placements to pass Hurdle Task 2 within the timeframe referred to on the Learning Management System.

Learning and teaching strategy and rationale

The second professional experience unit continues to incorporate a learning and teaching strategy which reflects respect for the individual as an adult independent learner. Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning and to participate actively during professional experience placements.   

Learning and teaching methods include:  

Authentic learning and case-based learning through application of knowledge, understanding and skills of course learnings under the supervision of a qualified professional in a professional workplace environment for a minimum of 140 hours

Active learning which will allow students to develop effective professional verbal and non-verbal communication skills by interaction with both clients and professionals in the exercise science field.

Critical reflective thinking activities which will give a greater awareness of the scope of practice of an Exercise Scientist within ESSA’s Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice

In addition, completion of this unit will allow students to complete mandatory Professional Practice outcomes required for Accreditation through ESSA as an Exercise Scientist on the completion of their degree.
