Additional information

Health and Physical Education (HPE) prepares future teachers to support children and young people to live healthy, active and positive lives. This teaching area focuses on both health education and movement, helping pre‑service teachers build confident, inclusive and engaging learning experiences for students across a range of school settings. Aligned with curriculum requirements in Queensland and Victoria, the program develops skills in physical activity, personal and social wellbeing, health literacy and respectful relationships. Graduates are equipped to respond to contemporary issues such as diversity, mental health, inclusion and student safety, while fostering a lifelong love of movement and wellbeing in their students.

Completion requirements

This teaching area is only available to VIC and QLD students in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary).

Students must complete as a first teaching area:

  • 60 cp from Health and Physical Education Discipline Area units (Part A)
  • 20 cp from Health and Physical Education Undergraduate Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) units (Part B.1)


Students in the following courses must complete:

  • Master of Teaching (Secondary)
  • Master of Teaching (Secondary) (Internship)
  • Master of Teaching (Secondary) (Leading Learning)
  • Master of Teaching (Secondary) /Graduate Certificate in Religious Education
  • Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching (Secondary)


  • 20 cp from Health and Physical Education Postgraduate Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) units (Part B.2)
