ACU Literacy Clinic

Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy

We believe that every student can learn to read and write if the instruction they receive is based on the best scientific evidence available. Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy is committed to understanding how people learn to read and write, and to translating that knowledge into effective teaching practices.

Our mission

Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy's mission is the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge on how people learn to read and write, how they use reading and writing to learn and express ideas, and how the others in their lives can best support those processes.

Our focus

In all our activities at the Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy we aim to be evidence-driven, impactful, rigorous, transparent, and ethical.

Ethical principles

We are guided by a commitment to social justice, equity and the dignity of all human beings. We celebrate all people as learners with the basic human right to receive high-quality, evidence-based literacy education so they can pursue their life goals with dignity and purpose.

Literacy education

We create innovative, evidence-based opportunities for parents and educators to enrich their knowledge of diverse learners and literacy development, and to empower them to effectively support literacy learning.

Knowledge translation

An important part of our role as researchers and educators is to translate and disseminate our findings and make them accessible to parents, educators, educational leaders and policy makers. We engage directly with education students and practicing teachers to translate scientific evidence into effective literacy instruction.

Research

We pursue research of the highest quality to better understand literacy learning and to improve literacy instruction for all learners. We base our decisions on scientific evidence and pursue research to add to that evidence.

Our research

Our current national and international research projects focus on understanding literacy learning, what constitutes effective instruction, and how to assess learning reliably and accurately.
