Advance your career and become a literacy specialist. This stream is designed to expand educators' knowledge of the foundational skills necessary for the development of reading ability at any age. Students will have the opportunity to develop and apply advanced knowledge of the theory and research surrounding early reading instruction, as well as build plan, deliver and evaluate evidence-based reading instruction that meets the needs of all learners. The aim of this stream is to provide educators with the knowledge and skills they to lead their colleagues in developing effective instruction in foundational reading skills for all students.

Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foundational Reading Skill consists of four 10-credit units:

Semester 1

  1. EDER550 - Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence
  2. EDER652 - From Phonemes to Phonics: Theory, Research, Differentiated Instruction and Assessment

Semester 2

  1. EDER651 - How Children Learn and How Teachers Can Meet the Needs of All Learners
  2. EDER653 - Word Reading and Spelling: Theory, Research, Differentiated Instruction and Assessment

All units are offered online and teachers can complete them one or two at a time in any order. The certificate can be used as part of Master of Education degree (for example, together with graduate certificate in Teaching Fluency, Comprehension and Writing we offer from 2025 onwards) or as a stand-alone achievement.
