Virtual-reality based rehab system wins Premier's Design Award in Digital Design

Elements is a virtual-reality based rehabilitation system for upper-limb function in people with a brain injury. The tabletop system was the product of an innovative Arts-Science collaboration between Professor Peter Wilson (ACU, Lead CI), Dr. Jonathan Duckworth (RMIT; Artist), and Professor David Shum and Patrick Thomas (Griffith Uni.). The project was supported by an ARC-LP, with the Australia Council for the Arts our industry partner. The system has been evaluated successfully in three published studies in both children and adults, in association with colleagues at the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Oxford-Brookes University, and Evelina Childrens Hospital in London. The team is currently developing a commercialisation plan that, with appropriate support, will hopefully see the system implemented widely in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, and private rehab practices.
