How to feed an Olympian: Professor Louise Burke on the delicate mix of timing, carbs and protein

The excitement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics may be over but the preparation for the next one has already begun.

When all else is equal the difference between gold and silver may come down to something as seemingly simple as what an athlete eats.

At this elite level, athletes take a personalised approach to their nutrition – with their diets meticulously planned, tested, and often underpinned by the latest research.

World leading performance nutritionist Professor Louise Burke is at the forefront of this research. To say Professor Burke is an expert in sports nutrition and diet is an understatement.

The former head of sports nutrition at the Australian Institute of Sport, Professor Burke has been the team dietitian for five consecutive Australian Olympic teams, from 1996 to 2012 and was at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to get Olympians in peak condition and exactly what they eat to do so, listen to Professor Burke’s on ABC Canberra here.
