This unit provides an orientation to the practice of sport and exercise in Australia from the perspective of the wide ranging opportunities for business and professionals in this sector. Starting with a review of the nature of sport and its meaning and significance in Australian society, it examines the contemporary growth of sport and exercise for health, educational and entertainment outcomes. The roles of government, business and professional groups are analysed in this development process. The interaction between sport, globalisation and international development is also introduced.
