Chick Butcher's interpretation of the crucifixion - Christ on the Cross, ACU Art Collection, can be found in the new Veritas Building at the Signadou Campus in Canberra.
Australian artist Chick Butcher believes that his works are the result of a deep personal dialogue and introspection.
The University has purchased his work Christ on the Cross - his particular interpretation of the crucifixion which invokes both a resolute, striking stance, and a quiet and inspiring contemplation of this fundamental event.
Taking pride of place in the 'heart' of the Canberra Campus (Signadou) at the recently completed Veritas Building, this stunning addition to the University’s collection will complement the building's architecture, and provide a profoundly spiritual element to the campus.
Butcher, a graduate of the Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney University and the Glass Workshop at the Australian National University, has a background working as a woodworker creating inlaid furniture. He brings these skills to play in Christ on the Cross, constructing four large panels of velvet black kiln formed and cold worked glass with the dramatic inlay of red rods depicting the profile of the figure of Christ.
With an inherent simplicity, the contrasting thin red detail provides a rich aesthetic element that is at once calming, reflective and completely engaging to the viewer, and in close harmony with its pivotal setting.
Through his questioning of “silence, purity and existence”, the artist makes an enduring statement that extends beyond the depiction, suggesting a transfiguration of form and reality, an ethereal process, and a high translation.
The artist is enjoying great recognition in Australia and internationally through numerous exhibitions, and has received notable awards for his glass art.
He is widely represented in significant collections including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Glasmuseet Ebeltoft Denmark, National Art Glass Collection, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
ACU Curator, Caroline Field said: “The University is delighted to present this uplifting and spiritual work in such a rewarding environment, providing a visual focus for the development of the Canberra Campus, and an exciting addition to the ACU Art Collection”.
