Michael Wheeler studied undergraduate exercise science at Dublin City University, graduating with a 1st class honours and the 2014 "Research Excellence Award" for a project which investigated the effects of subcutaneous versus visceral fat loss on markers of inflammation in response to a 12-week diet and exercise intervention. He moved to Australia to undertake a PhD at The University of Western Australia and The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne. He graduated from his PhD in 2019, and was awarded "The Paul Korner Medal" from The Baker Institute, and "The Robert Street Prize" from The University of Western Australia for a PhD which focused on understanding the combined effects of exercise and sedentary behaviour on cardiovascular and cognitive health. Currently, he is involved in multiple studies investigating the effects of diet and exercise on metabolic health at ACU's Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research.
